About Bacteriostatic Water
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative, supplied as a laboratory reagent.
The benzyl alcohol suppresses the growth of most bacteria, which is why a bacteriostatic vial can be opened more than once, unlike single-use sterile water. It does not sterilise a solution that is already contaminated, so aseptic technique still matters.
Benzyl alcohol is not compatible with every compound or assay, so check that it suits your method before use.
Storage
Store sealed vials at room temperature, out of direct light. Once a vial is opened, follow your lab’s rules on how long a multi-use vial stays in service.
